The Organizational Structure of Play the Planet

In our executive summary article, we describe the overarching shape of the system, but here, we want to describe the specific layers that constitute the game.

There is a hierarchy here, but it isn’t a very tall one.

At the top, keeping everything organized, is the Systems Layer. This is the Play the Planet website, the quest tree, the virtue engine itself that mints new Gc when Act of Service Quests are verified and stamped as complete. The glue that binds the holons together and the engine that keeps the system running.

Just beneath that are the Holons themselves. The organizational units we use to solve problems and measure our progress against those problems so we can track how we’re doing over time.

And then there’s you. The player. None of this would be possible without you. All of this – the layers above you, all of this exists for one reason: To serve you. To make it easier for YOU to go out and find things that are broken in your community and fix them. You don’t need to ask our permission. You don’t need to apply for the job. You are a citizen of your Holon. Of the Network. Of the world. That’s all the permission you need. Find a broken thing and fix it, and get rewarded for doing so. That’s the secret. That’s…some might say delightfully subversive.

And yes, note that YOU can create groups inside your holon if it serves your purpose. We don’t create them – you decide to. Or not. So that could technically create one more layer in the hierarchy but the system we built – it doesn’t come with groups pre-loaded. If you decide you want or need them, they can be created. That’s up to you and how you want to organize your Holon.

That’s it. That’s all. Nothing complicated.
